G’day Ryan,
Thanks so much for an awesome theme, I used it for my website (which anyone reading can access by clicking my name). It literally took me all of 30 minutes to get a completely functional affiliate site up & running, and it looks great!
You should start charging people for these! (I donated!)
Thanks again,
Jon Weston
I am so pleased with this theme! I had been looking for a truly versatile one. Had wrestled Thesis to the ground on another site of mine and got it to do what I liked. Had gotten rid of a bunch of magazine sites that were too cluttered and didn’t really show recent posts easily.
Clicking on my name will take you to my dog training blog where I have applied Flexibility2. I’m sure I’ll keep tweaking it but it’s essentially done, and the colors match my main website on the same domain name.
Kudos!
Rosana
Hello,
Is there a way to exclude Pages in the top nav?
Thanks and best regards.
Go into the header.php file and look for this code:
wp_list_pages(‘echo=0&orderby=name&exclude=&title_li=&depth=1′)
See the exclude= part? This is where you can exclude specific pages. You’ll enter the ID of the pages you want to exclude. The easiest way to find the ID is to go into the ‘Pages’ tab and hover over the title of the page. Look at the status bar of your browser and look for the ‘post=’ part of the URL. The number that follows is the number you’ll enter into the header.php file.
So if you want to exclude posts 32 and 45, you’ll end up with this:
wp_list_pages(‘echo=0&orderby=name&exclude=32,45&title_li=&depth=1′)
That’s all there is to it. There are also plugins that enable you to exclude pages.
Thanks, Ryan, for the quick reply. Very much appreciated.
Regards.
Just wanted to point out that the post numbers should come after the equal sign. BTW, thanks for the great theme – just started playing with it this morning!
Duh.. fixed. My fingers go faster than my brain sometimes!
This is pretty good theme. I was using theme developed by justdreamweaver.com. Almost same theme MODX. This one is kind of upgrade.
Thanks for great share
ModX is one of my themes also. One of my favorites actually. Good eye to notice the similarity in design!
If we’re using Flexibility 1.0.2 – How do we upgrade? Just upload the new files? Or will that cause problems?
Just upload the theme. The new version has the folder name flexibility2 while the original is just flexibility. However the new theme uses the majority of the same database fields as the old theme, so the new theme will probably retain some of your old settings. After installation you might just want to hit the ‘reset’ button and start fresh. I have had one user who had an issue installing the new theme with the old, and he had to go in and remove the old theme folder and the new theme worked fine.
Hey Ryan,
Congrats on such a sweet theme! Looking forward to playing with it. Also a couple of questions…
1. I have a couple of artist/photographer friends who need a pretty much complete very dark/black looking theme. Will this be easy to create with Flex 2?
2. Also is it possible to create a full width (1 column) page for several pages on a site with Flex 2?
If the above are both possible any hints on how to achieve what I need would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave.
Dark is very simple. Just choose the Dark color scheme in the options page, then tweak it from there. You can make everything dark if you want, even the post background and page background. A 1-column page has been requested several times and I may need to put that into the next version. Until then, you could always hack the code, but it might be difficult to just have specific pages full-width while the rest have a sidebar. You could always just hack the page.php file and use that for your full-width pages. Will be challenging.
I just downloaded and had a look. Great looking theme!
3 things I was wondering about:
1) It would be great if I could publish a post as a sticky for it go into the feature section.
2) Bullet points for ‘Recent Posts’, ‘Recent Comments’, etc. to make it easier to read long titles.
3) ‘Notify me of follow-up comments via e-mail’ option would be nice.
1) Point noted on the sticky post. I put it on my list for the next major release.
2) If you’re using the ‘Dark’ color sheme, you’ll have your choice of arrow or dot for bullet points in the sidebars. If you use the ‘Light’ scheme however, I take them out because the images are transparent PNGs that lighten the background color. So if you use a ‘Light’ scheme, they won’t have any effect since the sidebars have a white background. I put that on my list for the next version also. It’s just a little extra code to have two sets of bullets.
3) Use the ‘Subscribe to Comments’ plugin from Mark Jaquith and you’ll have the ‘Notify me of follow-up comments’ function added to your comments.
This is the best theme out there! With all the options you could make a crap load of different website with this one theme and no one would be the wiser!
This truly a master piece!
I really like this theme. The only thing I would change is all the adsense options built in without any options to use other ad sources.
I think it would be harder for people to use if I just provided space for script insertion. At least this way it’s just add your ID and enable. You can easily use any ad manager plugin to serve other ads though.
This is a great theme. I have already converted three of my blogs and will convert more later. Better than Thesis by far.
I was wondering if there was a way to keep the footer ads even after adding your own plugins?
Yeah man, but you’ll have to dig into the code to do it. Go into the footer.php file and look for:
Now copy the code starting just below this code above, all the way down to just before the PHP endif statement under the code for the right ad.
Cut the code.
Now go back up to the code above, and paste all that code under the div but before the PHP line. Then your ads will show on top and your widgets will show up below the if you have any activated.
Clear as mud?
wow great theme
thank you for such a nice theme, nice job!
can you set up a forum for this theme? for us to discuss on the issue related with this theme, it will easy for your theme user to refer also.
thank you for your nice theme
The new forum is up and ready to go. It will go live this week with the launch of the new FlexSqueeze theme.
This is an awesome theme, just what i need for some of my affiliate sites.
Question: Do I need to buy a license to change the affiliate links for the products in the header and footer? If I do that’s not a problem but how do i change the images and text for the products.
Thanks for a great theme.
cheers, Ian
You can do whatever you want with the affiliate links. The license just applies to the footer link. I included the affiliate links and product boxes/ebooks so people would have a good start in customizing the header and footer feature areas.
Flexibility (V2) is a great theme!!!
Only ONE thing i would recommend absolutely inserting! A pagination (hardcoded) without the need of a plugin. (on catswhocode is a tutorial to do this).
Flexibility is so great but it has the standard ‘previous entries’/'next entries’ navigation. A pagination would definetly be great.
Agreed. Lester Chan’s WP-Pagenavi function will be built into the next release without the need for the plugin.
I have installed themes in the past, but am having problems with Flexibility. Once I select it as my theme within WordPress, all I get is a pure text blog. I am apparently missing something in the files somewhere, but cannot figure out where. Is there something else I need to do other than upload into the themes folder and select it as my theme of choice?
Your stylesheet isn’t linking, probably either due to an improper theme installation or a permissions issue with your host. If you contact me with your blog URL, I can take a look and let you know.
Ryan or anyone else,
How do I show a horizontal Menu item with a rollover vertical menu. basically dynamic menu..
I have a main menu item with a submenu item like this
- About Us
–Management Team
–Contact Us
When the user scrolls over About Us I would like to show the other two menu items below it.
thanks.
There are a couple of forum posts about drop-down navigation plugins. There really isn’t an easy solution, as the theme doesn’t support two-level top navigation by default.
Your Flexibility Theme is very impressive!
A question: I’ve substituted my own background image by assigning it a name for one of your backgrounds and editing style.php to no-repeat (I want to be somewhat consistent with my twitter page). My background ends up being quite a bit darker (even outside the blog width), and I’m thinking it has to do with your transparent background images? But I don’t know whether that’s it, or how to work around. I would really appreciate any suggestion you might have. Thanks in advance, and thanks again for this great theme.
You’re exactly right about the background. It’s the gradient fade that’s making it darker. You can remove this by going into the style.php file and looking for the #bgwrapper code. Remove the line that reads: background: url(images/bg-fade.png) repeat-x top left;
Fantastic theme…the best, most ‘flexible’ to date.
Just one question – how do I take the ‘Categories’, ‘Archives’ and ‘Links’ from showing in the sidebar by default ?
I see it’s in the sidebar.php, but I just wasn’t sure exactly what to remove without screwing things up.
Thanks a lot for the excellent(even free!) theme,
Jeff
In sidebar.php, remove lines 64 (div class=”Categ”> to 69 (closing div) and lines 87 (h2 Archives) to 96 (ul close) and that will remove the default content in the right and left sub sidebars, but still leave them widget-ready.
Thanks for the quick reply Ryan.
I really can’t afford to buy the FlexSqueeze theme right now, due to being laid off recently, but I can actually save some money by buying it, and I’ve gotta support a guy that offers such a great theme (Flexibility) for free.
If you care enough to offer support on Flexibility, I feel good about buying FlexSqueeze.
Excellent work, and it is appreciated!
I’ll be ordering soon.
Jeff
Hi, loving this Flexibility 2 theme! Thank you so much!
Is there a way to change the size (make them larger) of the avatar images in the comment area? Where to find the code? Sorry to bug you.
Prior to WP 2.7, it was easy to control the size of the avatar. But 2.7 took a lot of the comment function behind the scenes, so it’s not as easy to customize that now. You can change the wp_list_comments tag in the comments.php file to control the avatar size. The default code is: wp_list_comments(‘type=comment’), but if you change to this: wp_list_comments(‘avatar_size=48&type=comment’) then you can pass the avatar size parameter into the comment-template.php file and control the size.
Wow – and this is FREE??? This compares to many of the premium themes out there that you spend quite a bit more on!
Hi, do you know of an easy way to change the default avatar (the no picture one) to a custom default gravatar avatar? Thanks!
If you go into Settings > Discussion, at the bottom you can choose from different icons. Is that what you mean?
I have tried a lot of themes that don’t live up to their claims but after a week using your Flexibility Theme I have found nothing I can complain about.
Thanks for the best theme I have used in all the years I have been trying all those other themes and being disappointed.
Hi, loving this Flexibility 2 theme!
Thank you so much!
Nice theme
This is a brilliant theme which definitely lives up to its ‘Flexibility’ title. I have used it on a few different sites now and am just about ready to purchase the paid version.
Well done!!
This theme ROCKS!
I have only one question:
how do I upload new images to the feature and footer php files?
I have my own products I’d like to feature.
I’ve got everything else figured out.
Can I or do I do it from my cpanel?
You can simply upload your images using the media library, then use the full URL to the image in the feature areas.
What is the primary difference between Flex 2 and Flex Squeeze.
The main difference is the ability to create squeeze pages with FlexSqueeze. But there are other differences such as a different theme options interface, more options in FlexSqueeze, and the ability to import and export your theme settings.
Ryan I just purchased FlexSqueeze and it is not installing properly. This is the message I am getting once I have installed “The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.” Not sure what to do from here. HELP!!!!!
Make sure you JUST uploaded the flexsqueeze.zip file that’s found INSIDE the original zip download. You don’t want to upload the entire file because then you’ll be needlessly uploading all the images that come with the theme.
We are impressed with your free theme design.
Please keep the good stuff coming.
Thanks a million and inspiration to all.
Regards,
Dennis Joshua
WoW , I just instaled this and all I can see is this is AWESOME…
I have never seen such a NICE theme.
also it would be great if we could have change the text or anything for feature section and footer easily by put and inserting html code into a text box from set up area.
Thanks again for this greate theme.
If you like version 2, wait until you see version 3! It doesn’t have built-in HTML editing for the feature areas, but there are a ton of other additions and improvements.
Can you tell us about when version 3 will be available? Thanks!
It’s coming really soon. I don’t want to give an exact date because I always tend to be too optimistic! I’ll say hopefully by the end of April and that SHOULD give me enough time to get things wrapped up. I’m moving FlexSqueeze onto it’s own site and releasing the next version of that theme as well, so there is a lot to get done.
Looking forward to checking them both out! Hope all goes well and they are finished quickly.
Ryan,Thanks again for greate job.
I mean a text box erea in the set up panel just would be fine to put our text or html code configure footer and feature section.
I’ve loving the theme. For someone who is not all that bright when it comes to editing code, etc it make it pretty easy to have it look the way I’m wanting.
Curious though… does the theme allow me to have a column on both sides of my post section. I’m not having any luck at making this happen.
Thanks
Flexibility 2 does not have that option, but Flexibility 3 will when it’s released.
Any idea of prices, and how much it would be to upgrade from Flexsqueeze?
No pricing set yet. I’m releasing a FlexSqueeze update first, then I will release the other two themes a little later. The new themes are undergoing a new round of code revisions but the FlexSqueeze update is getting close.
I LOVE this theme (can you hear that too many times, Ryan? LOL!).
When I downloaded it, I started using it right away. First 12 sites, no problems at all.
But now, there’s an issue. I am not doing anything differently (making replicated sites in different niches), but for some reason, at some point during early configuration (after installation), the feature area disappears–without my having changed anything in feature.php nor in the widgets, nor in the header.php file.
I’ve disabled all my plugins and that’s not the problem.
I’m having trouble pinning down exactly when it happens, but can you point to anything else I should look at?
In the meantime, I’ll keep looking…
Thanks!
~cj
My first suggestion would be to just delete the theme and reinstall to see if that fixes the issue. Someone else was having a similar issue and I believe a reinstall fixed it.
Ryan – really appreciate the time you in invested working with me on the final touches of our website. So nice to work with a professional that is responsive to email and provides clear instructions on how to make adjustments to get the most out of your site. I have gone through many sites now, and I have found this to be the best so far, let alone the integrity provided to the customer service of your subscriber base.
I will be recommending this to many of my contacts. I am hooked on your products and your service!
Ryan, this is absolutely a fantastic theme and I love it! I have one question…is there a widget or something I need to add if I have a page in my blog that I want to redirect to another site when the tab for it is clicked? I have viewed someone’s blog that does this with your theme but I can’t quite figure out how they did it. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Frank.
You could use a page redirection plugin to do that. Then you just create a page and redirect the link to another internal or external page. WP 3.0 now has the ability to create any kind of menu links so you can easily link to external pages.
I love love love this theme!!! I am in the process now of creating my very first blog and I am completly unexperienced and Felx 2 has been so easy for me to navigate and change things and personalize MY blog the way I want to without having to deal with any html coding. Thank you so so much!
