Hi Ryan

Can you tell me how to get the home page to display the first "x' words in any post, with a "more" link please?

Also, I have categories in a sidebar widget. Although I have hierarchical categories, they do not display as such in the widget.

You can't automatically truncate a post.  You just need to insert the 'more' quicktag into your post to break it.
