I want to remove the Categories, Archives, Links sections from the side bar. I tried adding my own widgets but those sections just fall below them. I see from looking at some of the links to others blog in here that it can be done, but I can't figure it out on my own.

If you activate widgets in the left and right sub sidebars, the categories, archives and links will automatically not show up.

I have the same problem. I have inserted widgets in the left sidebar, but Archives and Links still show up.
Is there some other way you are meant to 'activate' widgets in the sidebar?

There are three widget-ready locations in the sidebar. Top, left and right. The left and right are the SUB sidebars under the top sidebar. The Archives and Links are in the right sidebar, so activating a widget there will remove them.
